How To Share LAN/Wired Internet via WiFi Without Wi-Fi router

We lives in modern world and still many of us don’t have Wi-Fi modem in our house. The reason is Wi-Fi modem/router expensive than the normal LAN and USB modem. But we do have Wi-Fi feature in our mobile phones. Many times our phones app or games requires big data to be download via 3g or Wi-Fi. 3G is still an expensive connection for average income family users and without a Wi-Fi router we can’t actually create a Wi-Fi ad-hoc network.  We may have internet in our house but we don’t have Wi-Fi router. That time we feel upset.  Sometimes at mall, school, collage or offices we gets Wi-Fi networks and we use them. That time we recognize importance of Wi-Fi to download things faster without subscribing for an internet or 3g plan for a mobile separately.
wifi without router
Technology changes within a day. You buy something and the next day you get better stuff for cheaper price. Same way there is a small and cheap Wi-Fi adapter for your pc to create Wi-Fi ad hoc without a Wi-Fi router or modem. If you’re not able to buy wireless modem than you should go for Wi-Fi adapter and create a Wi-Fi hotspot in your house. There are many mini USB Wi-Fi adapters available on online stores like amazon, naaptol etc. but you might get cheaper if you buy from local pc market. I had seen a cheapest wifi adapter on ebay is 4$. You can find the best one for you and set up your home wireless network.

Requirements:
  • Internet connection
  • USB WiFi adapter

how to share pc internet with wifi enabled devices

Windows 8 doesn’t have wifi feature by default. so we use a different method to create wifi ad hoc in windows 8 I had created a separate post for windows 8 users.
Read more: how to share pc internet via wifi on windows 8

Windows XP users
Click on start or press window key
Go to Control Panel
Select Network Connections
Right click on Wireless Network Connections
Select properties
Click on Wireless Network tab and check the box "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings"
Now click add under the preferred networks
Write any Network Name (SSID) you want in text-box
Select shared in Network Authentication option
Select WEP in Data encryption option
Type your password in Network Key and click ok
Now you will see a network in preferred networks
Click on Advanced button and select “Computer-to-computer (ad hoc) networks only" click close
Now press ok. We have done everything from wireless connections

One more thing we have to do with our wired/LAN local area connections. Right click on local area connections and select properties
Click on advanced tab
Check the "Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection" Box under Internet Connection Sharing.
Now press ok and enjoy your recently created WiFi with your mobiles, Xbox 360, ps3, laptops and every wifi enable device.

Video available if your confused on some steps

Windows Vista & Windows 7 users
Click on start or press window key
Select "Network and Sharing Centre" (view by large icon)
Click on Setup New Connection
Choose "Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network"
Type any name in Network Name option
Select WEP in Security Type and type any password in security key
(you can check save this network check-box if you want to use this network again in future)
Click Next
Vista users will get "Turn on internet connection sharing" option click on it and enjoy wifi with your wifi enable devices.

So it’s the cheapest way to get wireless/Wi-Fi network in your home without buying expensive Wi-Fi routers/modem. If you can buy Wi-Fi router does it but the Wi-Fi adapter do the same thing with your normal modem. You can buy mini USB adapter from online or local pc market. Its way cheaper than Wi-Fi router

Configure Android and iphone devices

Before start connecting to created wifi adhoc. In your PC open command prompt and copy paste ipconfig /all and press enter now write down ip address(IPv4), gateway, netmask, DNS 1 and DNS2.
Its time to configure your device go to wifi and scan newly created wifi connection and go into advance setting of it and enter PC ip address(IPv4), gateway, netmask, DNS 1 and DNS2 thats it
android wifi configuration
if your phone wifi icon showing wifi connection and your still can't access internet. Then its just because your phone doesn't support adhoc connection don't worry you can solve this issue. So to support adhoc network just follow the instruction from XDA Forum

  1. how far does the range go? is it worth it? can we just use it like any other router?

    ReplyDelete
  2. The range depends on your USB Wifi adapter. I have a Netgear one, its speed is 54 mbps, but signal does not go through the walls, so its limited to the current room.

  12. Question: I have a unique (well perhaps not so unique) but a situation where i need to use internet connection sharing on one PCI nic to supply internet connection to another PCI nic AS WELL AS a USB access point. I dont want to buy any other equipment, is there some way to make it so i can have wifi (for my tablet) and also share the wired gige with another computer as the same time?

One obvious idea is to use ICS on the other (secondary) box to supply network connection to the USB accesspoint but I dont always have that machine powered on; yet I also dont want to reconfigure the network every time i connect my tablet or secondary PC? is there any NAT software that i can download to assist in my endeavor? what are my other options other than getting additional hardware?

    1. The easiest way to do this
Buy a USB Ethernet adapter it wont cost you much just 2/3 us dollar. Then create a homegroup and share internet to another pc. For your tablet try using inverse tethering

    4. i already told you above but never mind.

      method: 1
you said you have wifi in laptop so buy a wifi adapter for pc also and then follow this post.

      method: 2
buy a usb to usb ethernet cable and then connect both the system with it and start sharing network from your pc

      method: 3
buy a lan splitter and 2 cat5 cable. the splitter will convert your single lan connection into 2 so you can use lan connection on both system.

      method: 4
you can buy a ethernet hub it will allow you to connect more than 2 pc to internet.

all these method are simple but you have to buy one of device i told you above. its on you which one you select to connect your both system with internet

If i connect internet connection cable to wireless router and from pc and laptop to wireless router. So can i use internet on both system. Or Is it required wireless card in desktop pc. for connecting desktop pc and laptop via wireless router.

I have an additional laptop (wifi enabled), on which I access Internet using wifi hot spot from my Airtel Sim (2G) or wired lan. Now, I want to access the broadband on my Laptop (wirelessly) BUT I dont want to buy any additional Hardware.
Will it be possible to access internet using:
1). Connecting Desktop and Mobile (Android Based- Wi Fi Hot Spot enabled) using USB Cable.
2). Enabling WiFi Hot Spot of mobile.
2). Accessing Internet & Lan on Laptop using WiFi hotspot of above mobile.

  37. hi
I am using BSNL broadband connection. The modem i am using is not wifi. My question is 'can we configure the adsl modem through android mobile or tablet without wifi connection? I mean can we connect mobile to adsl modem through ethernet cable using RJ45-usb conversion cable and do the configuration? Please explain in detail. If possible please mail the procedure to my mail id rajbattu007@gmail.com

    1. yes you can. you need a otg cable + rj45usb cable and just configure your ethernet setting on you device if you have static ip and if you have dynamic ip then just leave it on dhcp and enjoy internet

  43. Hi Bharat Sharma, your advise is so helpful! I'm so glad if I could use my Android phone and TV with ability of WiFi. Unfortunately I don't have WiFi Router, but I have Lan connection of Internet in my computer. And as I understood, with help of WiFi adapter I can have WiFi ability to use my Android phone, is it so? But I would like to know, if I make changes of Settings in my Internet connection, as in your video, will I be able to use my stable LAN connection or not? Please respond me, and I'll buy WiFi adapter if it will work. Thank you in advance.

    2. Dear Bharat Sharma, I've bought Mini 150Mbps USB WiFi Wireless Adapter 150M 802.11n/g/b. Now I want to connect it as you described in video. But you described it using Windows XP, I use Windows 7, and in Network and Sharing Center I can find only Local Area Connection, there is No Wireless Connection under Network connections. Can you suggest me what to do, how can I find this section Wireless Connection in Network and Sharing Center? Please help me if it is possible, I want to use this WiFi adapter. Thank you.
